Sleep rhythmic movement disorderRhythmic movement disorder is common disorder of childhood. It is a sleep-wake transition disorder. Rhythmic movement disorder patients show rhythmic movements during rapid-eye-movement sleep, during which muscle activity is completely absent. The term rhythmic movement disorder is preferably said when different body areas may be involved in the movement activity.
Types Rhythmic movement disorder is investigated through Polysomnography.
Polysomnography is a diagnostic test where a number of physiologic variables are measured and recorded during sleep. There are different types involving different movements of body while sleeping. It can also be said that there are four types of Rhythmic movement disorder. As in case of head banging, head is forcibly moved in a back and forward direction.
This is common disorder in children. It can be associated with comforting rocking motion babies experience while in the womb. It's quite normal up to the age of three or four. As one reaches adulthood, it disturbs sleep creating the problem of insomnia. While in head rolling, head is moved laterally while lying on the back, face up position. It is most disturbing type among others.
Conclusion Head rolling, results in noises during the night. As also children hit the wall of the bed or something near places. But, till now no serious case has been reported. In Body rocking the whole body is rocked while on the hands and knees. Body rocking begins at an average age of six months. It is among the most affected type in childhood. Around 43% are suffered through it. In case of body rolling the whole body is moved laterally while in a sleeping on the back position.
As seen in above cases, some parts of body move and disturb sleep. But in this case the whole body creates vibrations and so disturbs the patients a lot. If the rhythmic movements seem to be heading toward self injury, it's time to seek help.
Self biting, scratching, hitting the body hard enough to cause injury are symptoms indicating to seek help. There can many reasons for Rhythmic movement disorder. Boredom is the main reason in childhood. In adulthood, stress, anger and worry seem to make the disorder worse. So, try to avoid these if you or a loved one suffers from rhythmic movement disorder.
